KZN disaster teams on alert amid disruptive rain warning

Local government officials say disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal are on standby for any emergencies brought on by the rain.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of disruptive rainfall in parts of South Africa on Tuesday, including KZN.


The Cooperative Governance Department has urged residents to be extra cautious as the downpours could potentially lead to localised flooding.


"Disaster management teams will be monitoring a number of areas that are prone to weather-related incidents," says spokesperson Senzo Mzila.

Authorities are keeping an eye on Alfred Duma Municipality, Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Underberg, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Ethekwini, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Escourt, Jozini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Giants Castle, Mooi River, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Ndwedwe and Newcastle.


"The MEC [Sihle Zikalala] has also called upon communities to ensure that they utilise only routes that are safe”, Mzila added.


"The MEC has also appealed for members of the community not to use unsafe areas or unsafe ways of getting across rivers and streams. The MEC appeals to motorists to drive with great caution as the roads can be slippery."
