KZN cop arrested for corruption after undercover probe

A KZN detective, based at the Inanda Police Station, is set to line up at the Ntunzuma Magistrate Court soon over allegations of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

Members of the Durban Serious Corruption Investigation Unit of the Hawks have had to handcuff one of their own, after an undercover probe, north of Durban last week.

They had acted on a complaint about a police officer who allegedly demanded a cash bribe from a suspect who was arrested for possession of a firearm without a license.


Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said in a statement: "The police official allegedly informed the alleged suspect at a later stage who is now a complainant in this matter that ballistic tests allegedly proved that it was used in the commission of a crime."


"The detective allegedly demanded cash from the complainant in order to squash the case docket."

During Friday's undercover operation, the detective was caught allegedly taking cash from the complainant. 


The 46-year-old officer was arrested and charged with fraud.
