KZN communities hit by storms ‘in dire need of donations’

There were calls on Tuesday afternoon to rally around the KwaZulu-Natal communities whose lives had been devastated by Monday's storms.

Tornadoes barrelled through Utrecht in Newcastle and Tongaat and Ballito in the afternoon.
In Tongaat, it left a trail of destruction, with homes that have collapsed and school roofs that have been blown off.

Power to dozens of households was also knocked out.
Verulam community leader Roshan Lil-Ruthan headed up one of the relief programmes in the storm-affected area.
He said residents are in desperate need of donations, including items for infants.

"There are a lot of babies that need nappies, so we are asking people to send forth nappies of different age categories. There is a request for baby formula. We are asking for dog and cat food and non-perishables, canned goods, blankets and second-hand warm clothing."
