KwaDukuza goes ahead with council meeting after coalition talks setback

The KwaDukuza Municipality says it will convene its inaugural council meeting on Monday.
A sitting scheduled for this week had to be called off at the 11th hour after many councillors said they couldn't attend due to ongoing political party negotiations.
"Political parties had written to the municipal manager to say that they had finalised their coalition talks and were willing to present their representatives for the council meeting," says municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize.
"We are adamant that everything will happen accordingly and in good spirit and we do appreciate the amount of calm in the community following the notice that we had issued.
"We are very happy, the spirit is up, and we go believe that KwaDukuza will remain committed to service delivery.”
Meanwhile, the Pietermaritzburg High Court is hearing an application by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province over a failed sitting in the uMngeni Municipality.
They want the court to force the acting municipal manager to call the first council meeting.
What was meant to have been the inaugural meeting last week was cut short when the DA walked out, accusing the suspended municipal manager of trying to illegally preside over the election of office-bearers.
