Kidnappings continue to rise in Gauteng

Gauteng provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says 2,341 kidnapping cases were recorded between January and March.

It is an increase of 15.8%.

 

Mthombeni detailed the provincial crime stats during a briefing at the Gauteng legislature in Johannesburg on Thursday.

 

He said the police have arrested 88 suspects linked to 62 cases of kidnapping between January and March this year.

Seventy-seven victims were rescued during the period under review.

 

"Hijacking and attempts, we have 1338 cases, robbery related 356. Ransom demanded 144. We are, of course, working closely together with our stakeholders to combat the kidnapping syndicate operating within the province,” he told MPLs.
