The Turkish company says it's ready to add 450 megawatts to South Africa's electricity grid next year from its power ship at Richards Bay.

The Department of the Environment last month granted Karpowership environmental authorisation.

It can now close the financial deal.

Chief commercial officer Zeynep Harezi Yilmaz says the deal in Richards Bay will help jumpstart the north coast economy and create reliable electricity and new jobs.

"In Richards Bay, we will be delivering 450 megawatts that will operate via natural gas, and this natural gas will be delivered liquefied form, which is -161 degrees and 1 600 of the volume of natural gas.

"So it is very condensed, and it will be re-gasified and stored and will be converted back to its gas use form and will be used in our power ships so that the molecules are converted to electrons, and we can deliver electricity to the much-needed South Africa grid."
