Karate kid, 3, makes Durban proud
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
A Durban toddler has made her parents proud after claiming a karate championship at just three-years-old.
Khiyara Maria Seedat has come out on top at the South African Karate and Kickboxing Championships held at the weekend in Johannesburg.
Seedat - from Parlock in Newslands - walked away as champion of the bo kata (stick fighting) and kumite (freestyle fighting) category.
She had just turned three the day before the tournament and competed in the under-five age group.
Her dad, Ahmed, who is a black belt holder, says she was exposed to the sport after she learnt how to walk.
"When she was one year, four months - I took her to Jogies Dojo in Overport where I train just to meet everyone and show her the environment.
"Thereafter, she insisted on wearing her little karate suit every day that was given by my instructor. She now looks forward to the training sessions every Saturday," he said.
He says he hopes his daughter will participate on an international level when she is older.
