Jonas urges South Africa to diversify export market

South Africa’s US envoy Mcebisi Jonas says the country should broaden its trade portfolio.

His comments come ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s expected announcement on South African tariffs and AGOA [African Growth and Opportunity Act] on Friday.
Jonas told delegates at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation seminar in Sandton on Tuesday that ties with the US remain crucial.

But he's urged Africa to lead globally, despite rising debt and trade threats - saying the continent needs stronger regional integration and global partnerships.
" South Africa should expand trade to new markets in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, strengthening trade and investment relations with North America and Europe. Export diversification is a key imperative that South Africa should take up."
