It comes after the 79-year-old was granted medical parole on Sunday - two months into a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court.

According to his foundation, Zuma couldn't attend Thursday's proceedings as he's still in hospital.

Judge Piet Koen granted the postponement when the court sat virtually on Thursday morning.

He says Zuma's special plea application will be heard in an open court at the next sitting.

If granted, it could see State Prosecutor, Billy Downer recuse himself from the case.

Koen said if Zuma requests another postponement, then that application would be heard instead.

"The matter is adjourned in the absence of the first accused and the representative of the second accused to 10h00 on the 21st and 22nd of September 2021 in open court in Pietermaritzburg for 1.1 the first accused's special plea and if the first accused applies for a further postponement his application for a further postponement to be heard which will include the necessary evidence on both sides being lead."
