Iran not funding SA case at ICJ - Pandor

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor has rubbished claims that the government received funding from Iran to challenge Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Pandor briefed the media on Wednesday on a range of International issues, including South Africa's charge of genocide against Israel at the UN’s top court.

The briefing comes a week after the ICJ ordered Israel to take all measures possible to prevent acts of genocide during its war with Hamas in Gaza.

There have been claims from some quarters that Iran funded the lawyers representing South Africa at the ICJ through a donation to the ANC.

On Wednesday, Pandor said the claims were nothing but part of a campaign to discredit South Africa in response to the charges.

"..As far as I know, the legal team has not yet been paid, and I have not seen an offer from Iran for such payment. But I know from the WhatsApp messages I get and what is said about me that the onslaught can be very fierce," she said.

Pandor said she is aware of the insults against her for challenging Israel at the World Court.

"I have been called an ISIS member and a Hamas adherent, and that Iran is my master. All sorts of rubbish. And, as I have said before, insults are the last refuge of a scoundrel, and we will get lots of these attacks.

“But it’s fine. We can be attacked. What we are focused on is the truth.

“The people of Israel are suffering from a form of colonised occupation, which is really something that South Africans should never accept. There is no funding from Iran. It’s merely an allegation, and we expect even more allegations to come our way," said Pandor.
