IPID 'shocked' by planned raid on its office

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it is shocked by a planned raid on its national office.
Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, who is involved in a war of words with IPID head Robert McBride, is apparently behind the planned raid.
IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini says they have obtained reliable information that the National Intervention Unit (NIU) was told to be on stand-by for the raid.
"If the information is true, this is yet more evidence of a systematic campaign to try and derail the investigation against General Phahlane, who is being investigated for various allegations, including corruption, defeating the ends of justice and money laundering," says Dlamini.
Dlamini says IPID served papers on Phahlane last week to interdict him from interfering with its investigation.
McBride says it is shocking that police resources would be used to shield a suspect just because of the position he holds.
"The audacity to abuse power and disregard for the rule of law for personal interest is staggering. This is reminiscent of similar conduct by the same policemen, who arrested Adv. Gerrie Nel and others to protect their masters," says McBride.
