"There are so many devices. Your normal tablet can have apps that can be downloaded. You can have your Kindle. So you don't really have to go out and buy a book."

This year, literacy month has been observed under the theme 'Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide’.

The global pandemic forced pupils and teachers to quickly adapt to virtual learning.

Pather, the author of Trials by Fire, says with digital resources at our fingertips - children need to be encouraged to read from a young age.

"Kids these days and even adults who say they don't have time to go to a book store or they don't have time to go to a library. All the literature is available on your smartphone, tablet, Kindle and I think it needs to be encouraged at a very young age."
