Inquest docket opened after fatal fire at DA KZN councillor's home

KwaZulu-Natal police say they had opened an inquest docket after a fatal fire at a DA councillor's home in Bergville.

Michael Buthelezi lost his wife and three children in the Sunday morning blaze at their house in Bethany.

 

Buthelezi the only survivor and is recovering in hospital from burn wounds.

 

He says he remembers hearing two explosions before the fire started.

 

DA KZN leader Francois Rodgers says they are surprised police are investigating an inquest.

He says there are clear indications it was a deliberate attack on the councillor and his family.

 

"Our appeal is to SAPS to leave no stone unturned to deal with the individuals who caused this death and destruction. Obviously one the issues that concern us as well is that we are not getting to the bottom of the root cause of political violence. 

 

"We have the Moerane Commission (into political violence in KZN) which was appointed some 12 years ago at an enormous cost. None of resolutions have been implemented and my appeal again to all political parties – let’s talk about the problem, lets implement the resolutions before we have further killings.
