Independent Media says slain photojournalist ‘massive loss’

Independent Media
says one of their KZN-based renowned photojournalists gunned down this week was
a beloved and hardworking team member.

The organisation's Mazwi Xaba says Bongani Mbatha's death is a massive loss to journalism.
"We are devastated. It's a huge loss, not only for Isoleswe where he last worked but also a huge loss for Independent Newspapers as a whole because he was a valuable, well-liked, hardworking photographer."
Mbatha was shot and killed in his home in Woodyglen in Hammarsdale on Tuesday. Xaba says they want Mbatha's outstanding dedication to be his lasting legacy.
"We also ran a number of stories just telling the terrible news, and we are doing something to celebrate his life. Bongani was well-liked by everybody, every journalist, writer's favourite photographer because he was so pleasant to work with."

Meanwhile, the DA in the province has called for justice from SAPS.
The DA’s provincial deputy leader Sithembiso Ngema and the party's provincial Social Development spokesperson Mmabatho Tembe are expected to visit Mbatha's family on Friday to pay respects and condolences.
In a statement, the DA in the province further says it is unfortunate that KZN has developed a track record of killings of high-profile individuals.
It further says there's also a sluggish response
to accountability
