The department’s completed the first phase of a project to replace old infrastructure there.

The R1.9 billion operation began in 2017 with assistance from Umgeni Water.

Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says this means that the plant, which produces 34 million litres of water a day, is now a reliable source of water to 28 000 households.

He says the water quality's also improved.

"What is now happening is that the system abstracts water directly from the Tugela River and treats it to drinking water quality as per requirements of the act and then distributes it to the municipality.

"This we believe is a game-changer and will improve the lives of the people of Illembe to a great extent and we believe that as we go on with the next phase, we will also be able to distribute this service to other municipalities, even eThekwini metro."
