IEC urges South Africans to make use of voter registration weekend
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
South Africans are being encouraged to go out this weekend and register to vote.
"We’ve built capacity to register the entirety of the 39 million people who are eligible, so we have capacity infrastructure wise, human capacity wise to deal with everybody that comes up,” said IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo.
"I think the commission will be happy to add list an additional 1.8 million people on the voters roll.”

Mamabolo said the voters' roll currently has 26. 2 million eligible voters.
He says over 23-thousand stations across the country will open from 8am until 5pm this Saturday and Sunday.
It has also urged returning voters to use this weekend to update or check their details.
"This is crucial because, with the amendments to prescripts, voters may only vote in the voting district in which they are registered.
"Deviation on this rule is only available on pre-notification to the chief electoral officer by a date to be regulated in terms of the election timetable.”
