HPCSA: Racial discrimination claims against doctors disturbing
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Health Professionals Council of South Africa says it is disturbed by mounting cries of discrimination by medical aid schemes against doctors of colour.
The news rocked the nation this week as a number of black and Indian medical professionals said they were being questioned about various elements of practice including the number of claims they put forward.
HPCSA's Dr Raymond Billa says the allegations are worrying, as both doctors and medical schemes are expected to conduct themselves ethically at all times.
"To that end we work with our core regulator, the council for medical schemes, the affected doctors and other stakeholders. We have had a meeting over the matter", he said.
"During that meeting we agreed to a programme to help us go deep into these allegations. If these allegations are found to be true there will be mechanisms to deal with them", Bill said.
