HPCSA accused of manipulating pass rate of foreign-trained doctors
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Health Professions Council of South Africa and the University of KwaZulu-Natal have refuted claims that they have unfairly failed foreign-trained doctors who want to practice in South Africa.

They've been accused by the South African Internationally Trained Health Professionals Association of manipulating the pass rate.
It's after about 70 per cent of applicants who wrote the board exams in October last year and February this year failed.
"We are aware the exam has two components. There is theory, which is where quite a number of these candidates struggle, but the practical part is a different picture," says HPCSA's David Mametja.

"The practical exam which was taken in December 2023 had a 94 per cent pass rate, and the one taken in May 2024 had a 62 per cent pass rate. So there is a lot of distortion and misinformation out there."
