An on-stage marriage proposal, a Game of Thrones victory comeback and a 72-year-old actor walking away with his first Emmy, after being previously nominated three times, are just some of the highlights of the 70th edition of the Emmy Awards.

The Emmys recognize excellence in prime-time programming - that is television and emerging media. 

During an opening performance last night - the cast of Saturday Night Live took jabs at the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry with the tune, We Solved It

The late-night comedy show's Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson were joined by other A-listers - the likes of Kristen Bell, Sterling K Brown, and John Legend.

Winner of the prize for Best Director of a Variety Special, Glenn Weiss, proposed to partner, Jan Svendsen, who was among the audience.

HBO series, Game of Thrones, scooped the statuette for Best Drama Series - among nine other awards. The program now has earned a record 47 awards overall. 

72-year-old actor, Henry Winkler earned his first Emmy for the role of acting coach, Gene Cousineau in the comedy, Barry.  He's earned the title of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy. 

Winkler had previously been nominated three times - with the most recent nomination back in 2000. 

While Thandie Newton gave an emotional speech - following her win for Best Supporting Actress, in a Drama. She plays the humanoid robot, Maeve, in HBO's Westworld

"I don't even believe in God, but I'm going to thank her tonight," she says.
