Health Dept pushes for vaccinations amid new Covid variants

The Health Department says there have been no reports of new variants of Covid-19 emerging in the country.

It released a statement to say that it is aware of a new wave of coronavirus infections in some parts of the world. 


The department's Foster Mohale says they have been monitoring the rise in cases, in these countries.

"The scientists in our extensive laboratory network informed us that they are continuing with surveillance and they don't see any rise of other variants nor cases in South Africa. We have had XBB 1.5 as the dominant variant for a long time in the country. 


"However, we continue to urge people to come foward and vaccinate and get booster shots." 


South Africa lifted all Covid restrictions last year, after two years of various lockdowns that included the use of masks and capacity restrictions on gatherings.
