Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo visited the mortuary today to address their grievances, following a two-day strike.

It's understood the workers were unhappy about the return of the mortuary manager, Nosipho Gumede - who had been on suspension.

Dhlomo says there was a range of administrative processes that should have been sorted out sooner by the department.

"I've apologized to them, I've asked them to go back to work and they've agreed. And we'll be sorting-out that administrative hiccup that almost took place there. And I've given my word to them that we are going to attend to that matter of what people senior to them should've attended to - it's quite a package of those concerns, I may not unpack all of that now," he said.

Earlier today, as the MEC was leaving the mortuary following his visit, the manager arrived at the facility’s gates. He informed Gumede to remain at home - until she produces a letter stating that her suspension has been reversed.

Dhlomo says he'll be meeting with the Head of Department this afternoon to address all concerns raised.

He also announced that community members who wanted to identify or collect the bodies of their deceased relatives at the mortuary, may now do so.
