Health Dept: No serious condom shortage
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Department of Health says there are enough condoms in the country, contrary to reports claiming serious shortages.
The department was responding to recent reports of shortages especially in the Gauteng province.
South Africa imports all its condoms from other counties, as it does not manufacture condoms.
Spokesperson Foster Mohale has however admitted that there has been delays in the supply and delivery of condoms due to global Covid-19 lockdowns.
"Before distribution in the country, samples of condoms are subjected to a rigorous testing process for quality assurance by the South African Bureau of Standards. At the current moment, there are no serious shortages or stockouts of condoms around the country, despite low stock levels in some areas, including in Gauteng. The department has been in constant communication with the provincial health departments to establish the stock levels of condoms and other contraceptives, to make quick interventions where a need arises."
