Hawks probe spate of KZN Post Office robberies
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The Hawks in KZN are investigating a spate of business robberies at Post Office branches.
Post offices in Hammarsdale, Amanzimtoti and Tongaat were all robbed in the space of a week. Sums of undisclosed amounts of cash were stolen at each branch, while in Tongaat, an employee was assaulted.
Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says one suspect was shot and killed, while others were arrested in Pietermaritzburg.
"Four suspects have been brought to book for the various Post Office robberies. On Tuesday a Post Office in Amanzimtoti was robbed by a group of suspects", he said.
"Later they were found in Umbumbulu and a shootout ensued with one fatally wounded while the others were apprehended", Mhlongo said.
Mhlongo says they're investigating the possibility of a syndicate carrying out these crimes.
"A Nissan Navara that fled the scene in Amanzimtoti and a Toyota Corolla that fled the Hammersdale Post Office were siezed by the Hawks for further investigations", he said.
All the suspects are due to appear in different courts tomorrow.
