Local musicians have gathered outside Durban City Hall ahead of a protest march, calling on the South African Broadcasting Commission not to scrap its 90% local content policy.

Carrying posters with the words, "Hands off 90%," and, "Charity begins at home," they say they want to send a message to the public broadcaster.

Sabelo Ngema - the lead singer of SAMA winning group - Afro Soul says local content is a great way for artists to get their music heard.

"Our content has to be number one in Africa, especially in South Africa. We are asking those who are in power, who are making decisions to respect our content and give us our 90 percent back, lets not argue about this. You can not give us less than 10 or 50 percent in our country," he said.

They have started their procession to the SABC's studios on K E Msinga Road.  Former COO - Hlaudi Moetsoneng - implemented the order across all radio & TV platforms last year - but the SABC's new board says it's to blame for revenue losses running into hundreds of millions of rands.
