Guptas may have exploited political protection: analyst

With Ajay Gupta still on the run, an analyst says South Africans shouldn't be blamed for thinking that - up until now - he and his controversial family might have enjoyed 'political protection'.

Sanusha Naidoo has been analysing the political developments in the country recently. 

"How this played out - was that you had a securitised state. The state of the nation was securitised - there was no independence of the legislature. 

"The independence of our judiciary was the last arbiter of our democracy and gave us that level of separation of powers. After he leaves, we see these things coming into play," she says.

The NPA's yet to announce whether it will reinstate charges relating to the arms deal - against former president, Jacob Zuma.  

The Hawk swooped on Gupta compounds last week, arresting eight people in their probe into the Estina Dairy Farm scandal. 

While Ajay Gupta's whereabouts are not known - his brother, Atul, who's in Dubai, is challenging an assets freeze of R10-million.
