Gun Free SA says shooting involving children a double tragedy
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Gun Free SA says accidents involving children and firearms in the home are 100% avoidable.
The group has been commenting after a tragic shooting incident in Empangeni, on the north coast at the weekend.
Police say an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot his two-year-old sister after finding a firearm in their home.
Officers say he then turned the gun on himself. Both children died.
"If it had been secured and as per the law - the keys to the safe were on the person's body - this need not have happened. This kind of death does not have to happen in South Africa. We have good strong laws. It's a double tragedy of not just the two children being killed in one moment with the same gun but this very thing that was supposed to protect his family - has in fact destroyed the family," says Gun Free's Africa's Adele Kirsten.
Police are also investigating a case of failure to safeguard a firearm.
