Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The Grocery Retail Market Inquiry has heard most transgressions relating to the sale of expired goods are happening in rural KwaZulu-Natal.
The Competition Commission is holding public hearings in Durban this week.
Director of Consumer Protection Services with the Department of Economic Development, Tsepiso Selepe says they made the discovery during inspections across the province, along with customs officials, the police and Home Affairs.
Selepe says during their inspections, they also uncovered fraud.
"What we found in some of the shops that we visited was CIPC (Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission) certificates and SARS documents which are not legitimate. You'll find that most businesses, especially foreign national businesses, use local residents' details to register businesses", he said.
