Government urged to do more to protect e-haling drivers
Updated | By Andile Tsotetsi
A KwaZulu-Natal metered taxi group is urging transport officials to help protect drivers from criminals targeting them on the job.

On Friday, the Ulundi Regional Court sentenced Simphiwe Mdletshe to life plus 15 years in prison for murdering and robbing a metered taxi driver in the Zululand town last October.
The 34-year-old and his accomplices had called Cebolenkosi Mnyandu to transport them from Melmoth to Newcastle.
Mdletshe admitted to attacking Mnyandu on the way and fleeing with his car.
The other suspects remain on the run.

Sizwe Mvubu, the national chairperson of metered taxis at SANTACO, says driver safety remains a concern.
"If we can have live tracking cameras in our vehicle, that can reduce criminal activities because people have become scared to hijack our vehicles."
"E-hailing has caused more criminal activities because previously incidents similar to what is currently happening are very minimal but people now are getting used to hijacking metered taxi. Government must intervene.”
