Gordhan charges 'part of a bigger political battle'
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Political analyst Ralph Mathekga believes the move by the Hawks to reinstate charges against former finance minister Pravin Gordhan is part of a bigger political battle.
The Hawks have subpoenaed former finance minister Trevor Manuel and his deputy Jabu Moleketi to provide clarity on the establisment of a special investigations unit at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
The unit allegedly bugged the offices of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in 2007.
Gordhan has previously faced charges in connection with the so-called SARS rogue unit, but it was later dropped.
But is seems these charges could now be revived.
Mathekga also believes there is a political reason why the charges are being revived.
"It is almost the same group of people in Treasury that are known to have pushed a lot for credibility for good governance and they represent a particular way of thinking within the South African discourse," says Mathekga.
Mathekga says this forms part of a plan by a faction in the African National Congress (ANC) to discredit the work done by Treasury in the fight against corruption.
"Actually there is an attempt to discredit what has happened at Treasury perhaps in the last two decades, and what is the best way to discredit what has happened in Treasury? It is actually to go after the people who are known to have credibility."
