A girl believed to have been about five-years-old has been killed in a collision on the N11, about 40km outside Ladysmith.
Paramedics have described the accident scene as horrific.
They found a vehicle pinned against a barrier on the side of the road last night with three passengers trapped inside.
They managed to remove the driver and one other person from the vehicle but the child sadly did not survive.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, another person's been killed following yesterday's accident involving a minibus and an SUV near Ndundulu in Zululand, taking the total number of those killed to four.
Robert McKenzie's with KZN Emergency Medical Services.
"The minibus is reported to have crashed down a steep embankment after the crash. Twelve people were injured in the crash, nine of them seriously and three patients had minor injuries and they were treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to hospital," he said.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate says three counts of culpable homicide are being investigated.
