South Africa’s economic hub province of Gauteng accounted for 80% of new Covid-19 cases reported on Wednesday, with concern rising that the province could be entering a fourth wave and is once again the epicentre of the new wave.
Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), show an increase of 1 275 new Covid-19 cases across the country.
This is a representation of a 3.6% positivity rate, which is also an increase over the past week.
"The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (80%), followed Western Cape for 5%. KwaZulu-Natal and North West each accounted for 3% respectively; Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga each accounted for 2% respectively; and Free State and Northern Cape each accounted for 1% respectively of today’s new cases. "
The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 2 950 035.
A further 22 Covid-19 deaths have been reported, bringing the country’s fatalities to 89 657.
