A case of conspiracy to commit rape has been opened against a former Wentworth councillor candidate.

Police station
Nushera Soodyal

Police say the suspect was allegedly heard talking to a woman in voice notes - discussing soliciting children to abuse.

It's claimed two children aged six and nine, and a teenager were mentioned in the chat.

The audio made its way around the community.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the man has laid a counter charge.

"Charges of defamation of character and intimidation were opened for investigation at Wentworth SAPS. The complainant alleged that he received death threats.

"The voice notes were circulating on social media and the matter is still under investigation."

The African Democratic Change, the party the suspect was affiliated to, has distanced itself from him.

"As ADEC, we view these in a very serious light. As our movement is a fighter for justice and for the rights of vulnerable groups, including children," says ADEC's Eric Kistensamy.

"Our leader Mr Visvin Reddy comprising of senior retired police officer and legal advisers."
