The sentence was handed down in the Newcastle Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecution Authority says the incident happened in September last year when contractors were digging trenches in Aviary Hill for fibre cable.

Spokesperson Natasha Kara says some community members, accompanied by Mahlaba, approached the workers and served them with a High Court interdict they had obtained, ordering them to stop digging.

"When the workers refused to stop, Mahlaba instructed unknown people to assault the workers. The people who assaulted the workers also took their tools and damaged the fibre cables.

"The National Prosecution Authority welcomes the successful prosecution."
