Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Five suspected robbers have been shot dead by the Hawks on the KZN south coast.
The group had been travelling from the Eastern Cape towards Durban.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says when the officers tried to flag down their vehicle on the N2 between Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach - the suspects failed to stop - and instead opened fire.
Mulaudzi says the officers pursued them after receiving information on their whereabouts.
Mulaudzi says the suspects have been linked to two cases of murder and robbery in Marianhill and Mpumalanga township - outside Pinetown.
"We recovered an AK47 as well as two 9mm pistols - which are unlicensed firearms. There were a lot of cellphones that were confiscated as well as cash," he said.
