Five people have lost their lives and at least 10 others have been injured in two unrelated accidents in the province.
In the first, four people died when a taxi and a heavy goods truck collided head-on along the N2, between Enseleni and Esikhawini, in Richards Bay. Details around this morning's accident are still unclear. Various emergency services responded to the scene of the accident, including IPSS.
The service's Richard Schouten says five people were seriously hurt.
"On arrival we found that the taxi had indeed collided head-on with the heavy goods vehicle. Four people died on scene. The injured patients were taken to hospital with various injuries," he said.
In the second accident one person has died while 5 others were hurt when two vehicles collided along Manning Road in Pietermaritzburg, in the early hours of this morning. It is also not known what caused the accident.
According to ER24 there was nothing that could be done to save the man who had succumbed to his injuries and he was declared dead. Injuries sustained ranged from minor to moderate.
Police are expected to investigate both accidents.
