First SA child jabbed in SinoVac trial
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The first child in South Africa has received the first of two Covid-19 jabs in a global vaccine trial.
The study is being carried out by China's SinoVac and its local partner Numolux Group.
Fourteen thousand children between the ages of six months and 17 years across five countries are taking part in the trial.
The companies say South Africa has 2 000 participants.
Dr Sanet Aspinall is the Project Director and Principal Coordinator for the trial in South Africa, which was launched earlier at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Pretoria.
"During this pandemic, there has been very little done for the children, and therefore, this child will really address a big need in terms of having a vaccine that can be tested and can be made available for children not just in this country but throughout the world and will be an effective health tool to curb the pandemic,” he said.
