Few ANC Phala Phala rebels ‘no surprise’ - analyst
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A political analyst says it was no surprise that a handful
of ANC MPs broke ranks to vote for the adoption of the Phala Phala report in
Parliament.
The vote on whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should face an impeachment process was rejected during a special sitting of the National Assembly on Tuesday.
The governing party defeated the motion by 214 votes to 148.
An independent panel found that Ramaphosa may have violated the Constitution over his handling of the theft of foreign currency on his Limpopo farm.
Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was among four MPs who voted against the marching orders of the ANC.

“The likes of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma were going to act the way they did because I think she represents a dying faction whose hopes rest with her and Zweli Mkhize. Clearly, I think she made the point but to no end,” says political analyst Imraan Buccus.
Buccus says while there's been a mixed reaction to the vote, he feels political parties should also focus on other concerns.
"I think from the persistent assassination of grassroot activists to high price rates to load shedding, to an ailing economy, we also find ourselves in an imperfect democracy."
