Fawzia Peer new eThekwini deputy mayor

eThekwini Municipality EXCO member Fawzia Peer is now the city's new deputy mayor. Her election follows that of Zandile Gumede as Mayor during today's inaugural council meeting at City Hall.

Her election follows that of Zandile Gumede as Mayor during today's inaugural council meeting at the Durban City Hall.
Peer, the former finance and procurement committee chairwoman, has been tipped to bring in the Indian electorate during her tenure.
Both Peer and Gumede took their oaths of office earlier today.
The two women take over from outgoing mayor James Nxumalo, and former deputy mayor Nomvuzo Shabalala, respectively.
Meanwhile, the ANC has managed to retain control of the Ekurhuleni metro after city chairman, Mzwandile Masina, was elected as executive mayor earlier today.
Masina, who is the former deputy minister of trade and industry, received 117 votes - against DA candidate Ghaleb Cachalia’s 106.
