Families of Enyobeni victims march as owner appears in court

The families of the victims of the Enyobeni tragedy marched to the East London Magistrate's Court on Friday to demand justice for their children.

Enyobeni owner, two employees arrested for tavern tragedy

Twenty-one young people died in the tavern tragedy in June.

While the Department of Health has given suffocation as the cause of death, the parents of the victims remain unconvinced.

The march comes as the tavern owner Vuyokazi Ndevu and her husband, Siyakhangela, make another court appearance on charges related to the contravention of the Liquor Act.

The Southern African Alcohol Policing Alliance in the Eastern Cape also formed part of the march, with the organisation's Terri-Liza Fortein saying they want the NPA to review the case against the owners of the tavern.

"We are on the streets of East London today to ask for accountability and for justice SP (Scenery Park) 21.

"We are asking for a full inquiry into what happened to these 21 young people and we want the government to really take a look at the state of circumstances that led to this tragedy and put legislation in place that will prevent this kind of thing from happening again."

Fortein says the organisation has also launched an online petition in support of the call for justice.

"We want to put as much attention on this matter as possible. We do not want the SP 21 to be forgotten.

"We want all South Africans to stand up for the SP 21. So we need to work to ensure that the circumstances change so that we can start seeing less underage drinking and make our communities safer for young people."
