The intervention has to do with high water demand, stemming from the city's central and southern regions.

eThekwini says the elevated demand has significantly reduced the storage levels at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works.

It's led to water outages and intermittent supply.

The city's spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says officials will be on the ground for the next seven days to identify leaks and bursts along the bulk mains within the water distribution system.

Sisilana says some reservoir inlets and critical pump stations will also be shut down during investigations.

"The public is advised that these investigations are complex and time-consuming due to the extensive pipeline network and infrastructure involved.

"Initiatives commencing on Friday, 12 July, are expected to continue for seven days or until Wiggins storage levels are fully restored. Our teams are closely monitoring the system to ensure the full restoration of water supply. In the meantime, residents will be provided with water from tankers."
