eThekwini metro police to outline fight against violence, looting in city
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The top brass of the metro police department in eThekwini have called an urged press briefing on Tuesday afternoon.
It’s expected they will outline their plans to respond to the escalating incidents of looting in the city.
The urgent briefing by eThekwini metro officials comes as law enforcement has had their hands full trying to contain the several incidents of looting in Durban and greater KwaZulu-Natal, such as the mass looting in Queen Nandi Drive near KwaMashu .
When Newswatch arrived there, we were meet with a wave of looters running down the road and away from the various furniture and appliance stores that they had just hit.
Metro officials had also had their hands full as all they could do was stand by and watch as a helicopter conducted a flyover, taking in a birds-eye view of the chaos.
Still, on Queen Nandi Drive, unconfirmed reports from the ground suggest that at least one person was killed while trying to escape.
At the Engen garage, which had also been ransacked, Newswatch spotted a man crying and in intense pain who had been knocked over and had broken both his legs when a vehicle made a getaway amidst the looting.
It is expected metro law enforcement will outline plans to tackle the ongoing looting.
