He acknowledged a long way to go in addressing these issues, but believes that efforts to revitalise Durban through their inner-city regeneration programme are progressing.

Xaba addressed members of the business community at the ICC on Wednesday morning to discuss the city’s R70.9 billion budget for the next financial year.

" We want to improve public safety. Address the challenge of homelessness, eradicate bad buildings, and upgrade public ramps. We don't want patching - I want the burying of potholes in the city, and ensure we keep our street lights on.

"Since law enforcement is the key component of this program, we have increased the number of metro police personnel and deployed technology to enforce the bylaws."

Governance Committee Chair Nkosenhle Madlala says they know the city's facing major hurdles but insists they're working on solutions.

" Service delivery back blocks, infrastructure strains, and the agency for storing public trust and confidence demands results. And yet, despite these challenges, you, our business partners, continue to believe in the potential of this beautiful city."
