eThekwini defends trainee pay cut at Metro Police College
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
eThekwini Municipality has responded to claims of exploiting trainees at the Durban Metro Police Training College.

This week, the council approved a proposal to upgrade the academy, which will now offer a full three-year training course.
Trainees will receive a R7,000 monthly salary, down from the initial R17,000.

The city says the remaining R10,000 will go to service providers responsible for daily operations like cooking and cleaning.
However, Action SA's Zwakele Mncwango has criticized the city for cutting salaries.
"We believe this outsourcing of services is exploitation. The municipality should be able to continue and do the training in-house without outsourcing."
