eThekwini to conduct ‘regular’ water tests over festive season
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says samples from Durban's beaches will be tested regularly throughout the festive season.
He's assured residents and holidaymakers of the safety of our beaches but, in the same breath, notes that E. coli levels are always fluctuating.
The mayor says they recently teamed up with the non-profit Adopt A River - samples are being analysed by an independent lab, Talbot.

"The results today may give you positive results, two weeks after it gives you a negative result.
"So we carry a responsibility not to allow people to swim in our oceans where the water quality is not guaranteed. The level should be below 500. So whilst they really above 500, it starts alarming that we need to do something."
He says levels in Durban beaches are acceptable, and all 23 bathing beaches are safe for swimming.
Speaking at a media briefing in Durban, Kaunda addressed a number of concerns around water issues - including the municipality's wastewater challenges.
