Elderly woman robbed, thrown off Durban bridge

An elderly woman is recovering in hospital after she was allegedly robbed and thrown off Athlone bridge into the Umgeni River in the north of Durban.

ALS paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson says they were called out to attend to the victim who nearly drowned on Wednesday night night.
"Paramedics arrived on scene to find Metro Police Search and Rescue in attendance. Paramedics were shown to a female believed to be in her sixties who alleges that whilst walking along Athlone Drive she was robbed and then pushed off the bridge into the fast-flowing Umgeni River below.

"Metro Police Search and Rescue division were able to rescue the lady and brought her to safety. The lady was treated for moderate injuries by ALS paramedics before she was transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that she required.
“Metro police and SAPS will be investigating this incident."
