Zuma addressed the three day Basic Education Lekgotla in Pretoria, which will reflect on the performance of the entire basic education sector.

President Zuma dedicated this year's lekgotla to ANC struggle stalwart and teacher Oliver Tambo,  describing him as an embodiment of all that was good and noble about the teaching profession.

Zuma says education remains government's top priority and remains the only way out of poverty.

"We will always prioritise the education of our children, because it is only through quality education that we can win our struggle against unemployment, poverty and inequality," says President Zuma.

Zuma urged delegates at the lekgotla to pay particular attention to the shortcomings in the system to ensure that we continue improving performance in education.

"We must do more to improve learner outcomes in mathematics, physical science, accounting, and languages. More children must be encouraged to take these subjects and more teachers must be trained to teach these subjects," says President Zuma.
