They are contributing to East Coast Radio's KZN Flood Relief donation drive - in partnership with Gift of the Givers.

Janet Niedermayr from Somerset Park in Umhlanga stopped by East Coast Radio House on Friday to drop off blankets and pet food.

“We’ve always supported Gift of the Givers.. you know whatever you give is going to the people..”

Phoenix resident Kugan Ragavan has volunteered his time and has been manning phones since early on Friday morning to take in the pledges.

”People are really with the people who have been affected, you know, it’s for the community by the community. People are very generous, from large amount to ten rands. We’ve had kids here donating their lunch money and stuff, so its good the young kids are involved.

“The overall atmosphere is for the community, by the community of KZN and the pledges are coming in.”

East Coast Radio's Managing Director Boni Mchunu says it is heartwarming to see young and old come out to to do their bit.

”As the people of the province we all live by the spirit of ubuntu, that I am because you are. So what’s happened this morning is absolutely phenomenal. The kindness that we are seeing as a business really gives us courage to keep going.”

Donations were sitting at just over R6 million at lunchtime on Friday.
