Easter road death on the decline - Creecy
The transport minister expressed satisfaction with the results of the Easter Road Safety awareness campaign, that was launched before the Easter holiday, thus far.
Updating the media on the Easter Road safety campaign on Monday, at the Kranskop Plaza, Minister Barbara Creecy said no major accidents had been recorded in the N1 since the beginning of the easter holidays.
This is despite the Kranspok plaza having recorded 2047 vehicles per hour on Thursday and Friday.
“This is a rare occurrence on this route, and it speaks to the effectiveness of law enforcement and the deployment plan in improving road safety,” said Creecy.
She said that although she could not give the full national statistics of fatalities that occurred during the holidays, the department has seen a significant decrease in fatal accidents in all provinces except Mpumalanga.

The Mpumalanga Easter death toll had climbed to 15 last Friday, after three people died in a car crash on the R35 between Bethal and Middelburg on Friday night.
“Our statistics of crashes and fatalities are still undergoing quality assurance and verifications, and early indications are that our safety campaign is holding strong, and the public has responded positively to our messages.”
The Minister thanked law enforcement, faith-based organisations, road safety influencers and Tarven associations for the success of the Easter Road safety campaign.
