East Coast Radio hosts roundtable with UKZN student representatives
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Hosted by East Coast Radio, student representatives of the University of KwaZulu-Natal have voiced issues of concern during a round table discussion held in Durban.
Concerns over fee increments, and recent protest action were among discussion points yesterday at the panel discussion facilitated by East Coast Radio's Phat Joe at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel.
The university's Student Representative Council leader, Senzo Ngidi believes fee increases are not the only way government can tackle the financial deficit at universities.
Based on projections, UKZN is among at least 16 out of South Africa's 26 universities that's expected to have deficits over the next financial year.
According to Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande a R3.97 billion loss will be incurred if a 0% increase is implemented for the coming year.
Ngidi said government should explore other methods in order to find an alternative to fee increases.
