DUT students in court for public violence
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Eighteen students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) are due to line up in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says they were arrested after a mass demonstration along Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street.
She says a crowd of about 300 students, belonging to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Student Command, went door to door at DUT residences on Sunday night, to drum up support for the upcoming SRC and local government elections.
Gwala says police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the group, added that officers were pelted with stones.
"A case of public violence was opened for investigation at Durban Central Police Station after a group of students embarked on a protest action in the Durban CBD."
